These dates must be incorrect. Don Friedman was playing at Basin Street, New York City with Buddy DeFranco ("and his Pacific Coast Jazz Group") from Wednesday, November 21 to Saturday, November 24, 1956. In January 1957, the group appeared at Birdland and in February they began a month-long stay at the Cafe Bohemia.

Some sources date this as 1957, which is possible. DeFranco may have been in the area around April. Further research needed.

"In 1956, Buddy DeFranco was forming a band for a nine month tour that played all around the East Coast. I auditioned for the gig and got it. That was my first chance to travel with a real jazz group. We came to New York and played all of the jazz clubs of that time, including Birdland and the original Basin Street." - df

Don Friedman (p) on b; Gene Taylor (b) on b; Billy Kaye (d) on b.

Some sources incorrectly list this as from 1966.

Lord corrects drummer on Straight No Chaser to Connie Kay from Billy Kay - but this is likely incorrect. Neither Attila Zoller nor Don Friedman recall Connie Kay playing. Confirmation needed.

Some sources state that Straight No Chaser was also issued on Europa Jazz EJ55. This is possible as "Europa" and "I Giganti" are produced by the same company. This title shown by Bruyninckx to be from 1961 and issued on "I Grandi del Jazz (It) GdJ55" however that issue is for a Bud Freeman recording.
