The new radio season finds Bing signed up with General Electric but with the same supporting team. Ken Carpenter as announcer, John Scott Trotter Orchestra, and the program was broadcast over the CBS network.
This show and the next recorded on the same day, with number 3 following after only three days later, before Bing's departure for France.
The process that was evident in some of the Chesterfield shows of pre recording songs in the studio and inserting them into the shows, thus making a show that was at least in part 'artificial' is now more evident. Sometimes the same recording was used on several occasions. The listing here has attempted to follow the format of the radio shows. However in some instances there were several takes for one song, with more than one available on record so the stict format of the show is not always possible.

In the intervening period between the recording for the third General Electric show and the recording for this on 9th November, Bing had visited Britain and filmed "Little Boy Lost" in France. Shortly after his return on 25th October his wife collapsed and subsequently died. In consequence the GEC shows were hosted by Judy Garland and James Stewart. Vocal performers appearing were Rosemary Clooney and Gordon Macrae, with Ken Carpenter and John Scott Trotter remaining in their usual roles. The shows were broadcast on 30 October and 6 November, this one of 13 November therefor being numbered 6 in the sequence.
The Sunbeam LP HB 309 "The Dinah Shore- Bing Crosby Shows" apparently contains an edited version of the show but I lack information as to the completeness or otherwise.

This version of "That's A-Plenty" is usually assumed to be that which was mastered for commercial release by Decca. Lionel Pairpoint expresses a reservation -
"This is the only duet of the song, with Connie Boswell, heard during the GE series but there is a possibility that this is not the version of the song that was mastered for commercial release. A comparison between the broadcast version and the commercial issue reveals a minor but significant difference. On the broadcast version as evidenced by the above-mentioned issues the second rendition of the line, runs, “Well, you beat it out brother, there’s no other remedy (Yeah!) - And that’s a-plenty..” This interjection of “Yeah!”, by Connie Boswell, is not apparent on the commercial issue. The compiler prefers to keep an open mind on the subject!
The present compiler believes that it is just possible that some judicious editing was involved.

"Lady Of Spain" appears on a number of issues some of which give other dates for the broadcast. The version listed here appears to be identical to that included in show number 34 broadcast on 28th May. Lionel Pairpoint appears satisfied they are the same, partly basing his conclusion on the pattern of applause. I see no reason to differ. Editing individual items fron one broadcast session to another was becoming increasingly frequent by this time.

There appear to have been a number of recording sessions at Palm Springs in the period Febuary- March 1953 at which many songs were recorded for insertion into subsequent shows. Some songs were recorded in slightly different versions. It is not always possible to establish with precision which songs were recorded when and into which programs they might have been inserted.

This programme and the next six are all introduced as being transcribed in Paris, France.
Lionel Pairpoint long ago drew attention to the possible problems in taking this at face value - the entire crew, which he lists as John Scott Trotter plus orchestra, Ken Carpenter, Joe Venuti, Buddy Cole, Bill Morrow and Murdo MacKenzie, plus a number of others, many of whom presumably had other commitments, would have had to accompany Bing.
Bing commenced his trip to Europe in March, with son, Lindsay and returned in June.
In fact it was confirmed in 2011 with the issue of a series of recordings by the Crosby estate, that all of the musical items at least were made in an extended series of recording sessions during February and March 1953 in Palm Springs.
Why the deception? - I can only suppose that the radio network, or the sponsors, still wished to give some sort of air of immediacy, and not admit to the fact that much material had been "put in the can" to be pulled out while Bing was on holiday. It is possible that some verbal linkage from Bing might have been recorded in Paris which might at least partly justify the phrase "transcribed in Paris".

From this point in the GEC series, the opening signature tune is replaced by an orchestral opening, and commercials are dropped to be replaced by discussions on a theme, usually of a political nature, indicative of the cold war then at it's hight. GEC is rarely mentioned and it is interesting to speculate what commercial gain was there for them in sponsoring a commercial free show.
"What A Little Moonlight Can Do" and "Embrasse-Moi Bien" are the versions issued commercially.

This show appears to have been broadcast out of the sequence of the recording dates, the two programmes appearing immediately after being recorded previously. There seems no obvious explanation.
Lionel Pairpoint lists " Everybody Loves My Baby" on Koala KO14207 as originating from this broadcast solely on the basis of the pattern of applause. Unhappily this was the very first LP that I sold out of my collection and am unable to check. I have regretted the sale ever since but was offered a price I could hardly refuse at the time!

"Mon Coeur Est Un Violon" is the version mastered for commercial release.
Bing introduces "Everybody Loves My Baby" as being accompanied by "our very competent jazz group". This implies John Scott Trotter's usual Dixie style line up. However one authority names this as The Firehouse Five Plus Two. This group did appear on some Bing Crosby shows under their own name but the present compiler thinks it unilkely that they would appear anonymously.

"Y’All Come" is the version mastered for commercial release.
It is presumed the "Cass County Boys" are in fact drawn from a section of The John Scott Trotter Orchestra.
The appearance of Marie Green or Greene is a slight mystery. Usually in the radio shows an individual from the "resident" small vocal supporting groups was used for any small additional vocal support. There was no resident vocal group for most of the GEC final season. Marie Green or Greene was an artist in her own right (leading her own band at one time 'Marie Greene and her Merrie Men', made a number of records, including several V-Discs, and appeared as a featured artist on several radio shows. She later had several film appearances, but here she attends one programme for a minor supporting role on one song.

Lionel Pairpoint declares some doubt as to whether the version of "Gypsy In My Soul" that appears on Broadway Intermission BR111 is from this broadcast, whilst accepting that it is identical. He explains that on BR111 Bing can be heard saying "thankyou" in the midst of applause whereas on the broadcast version no word is evident. I believe it might have been possible for the issuers of the record to use a copy of a pre-edited version of the broadcast tape, the applause being shortened for the broadcast (and the word "thankyou" lost). It is also possible tyhat they have spliced in applause from other sources. The actual musical performance is the same. It would seem merely to confirm the fact that much of the material was assembled from pre-recordings some of which in consequence exist with slightly different 'noises off'.

Several issues suggest a date of 13 May 1953 for " You Go To My Head". The surrounding dialogue and 'noises off' are different but this does not preclude the likelihood that the musical content is from the same original source.

Most authorities date the recording of this show to 28th February.
The MP3 release 'With All My Heart' of 2011 appears to contain the same version of 'Secret Love' and gives the date of recording as 19 February. As it was issued through the auspices of the Crosby estate with access to all recording information, I am assuming that date may be true of the remaining songs for the programme.

Lionel Pairpoint states that the instrumental group accompanying the section from "Let's Harmonise" to the the reprise of same is announced as a group of individuals - Perry Botkin (Ukulele/Guitar); Buddy Cole (Piano); Phil Stevens (Bass) and Nick Fatool (Drums), which could be regarded as Buddy Cole and his trio without the formal identification. However, on my tape, which has no obvious dropouts, there is no such introduction. Pairpoint also identifies the group of songs as a medley. There is in fact a distinct break between items with Bing making verbal comments and audience reaction.
The orchestra is definitely present in "Let's Hamonize", whilst "You Tell Me Your Dream" has piano and ukelele, "That's Where My Money Goes" has a prominent ukelele with little else, a piano on "Tell Me Why", no instrument at all on "Mary Jane", which is sung in "barbershop" style, while the orchestra re-emerges on the reprise of "Let's harmonise".
It is interesting to note that Gary and Lindsay, the oldest and youngest sons, were frequent "guests" on the programmes, but that the twins Philip and Denis appeared relatively infrequently.

"Tell Me Why" appears to be the commercially issued recording with Bing multitracked.
This was the last show of the series, but it seems there were doubts. At the end of the programme Bing says “I hope to see you all again, next week, when our guest will be Miss Rosemary Clooney” . Ken Carpenter repeats this in the closing announcements.
The dialogue between Bing and Ken Carpenter is a summing up of the various political points made in earlier programmes. "We've been interpreting the economic scene for how many weeks now ---". "We'll try the impossible, to sum up what we've been saying all through the year" etc. They then do precisely that. So they are bringing an end to the series but promising another show.
The explanation seems to be that there was confusion caused by the fact that Gary Crosby was due to in effect, take the show over, but had been involved in a car crash. There is much more detail about this on the 'Bing' Magazine website in the 'Bing On Radio' section
It is noticeable that in the last season for GEC there were few big name guests, and considerable use was made of Gary and Lindsay Crosby. Musical quality remained high but the loss of comedy sketches and inter-action with guests tends to produce a lacklustre feel. It now seems obvious to me that the main cause of this was the 'manufactured' nature of the programmes, the full extent of which has only become fully evident in the last few years. In this context it was obviously not possible to have prominent guests.
Bing's subsequent involvement in radio was restricted to one-off specials and to the long series of short programmes for which many individual titles were pre-recorded in a studio without audience with the Buddy Cole group and later with Rosemary Clooney, with varying sponsors. These were assembled in various combinations into programmes with new connecting dialogue inserted. The process of covertly 'assembling' programmes from pre-recorded songs apparently started in ernest to cover Bing's extended absence in France became an established feature in all the later radio shows.
